In August, demolition of former industrial buildings on a plot of land between Gonsiori, Jakobsoni and Kunderi streets in the Torupilli district of Tallinn began, with the aim of building a residential quarter there. According to the developer, some of the limestone buildings will be preserved.
‘The detailed plan is currently being drawn up, we have been granted a permit for demolition, and we have started the works,’ said Kajar Kruus, director of the residential construction and real estate development division and member of the management board of Astlanda, the real estate company developing the property.

According to Mr Kruus, they are already working on the design, but they do not want to share the drafts before the detailed plan is approved.
The property has been owned by Astlanda since 2016.
According to the developer, the historical two- and three-storey buildings will be preserved on Jakobsoni tänav, with up to two storeys added as an extension. It is also planned to preserve the chimney of the boiler plant. All other buildings on the site will be demolished.
Five buildings and a substation are proposed on the site.
According to the detailed plan, the building line along Kunderi tänav is defined as an extension of the street façades of the neighbouring buildings Kunderi 17 and Kunderi 19. On the side facing Jakobsoni tänav, the building line defined by the existing building is maintained. Balconies extending above the building line are planned only on the street-facing façade of the new building in the north-western part of the site.
According to the detailed plan, the corner of Kunderi and Jakobson streets will be opened to the public as a small square in front of a possible eatery, which will inherently highlight the surviving buildings, thereby paying homage to the valuable industrial architecture and creating a cosy introduction to the other planned buildings.
